Why is it important to make a 1% tax donation?
Donating 1% of one’s personal income tax (SZJA) provides an opportunity to use part of our tax to directly support civil society organisations or churches. However, year on year, significant sums remain unallocated, meaning they do not reach organisations in need.
According to a 2023 study by the National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH), a total of 163.230 billion forints was raised from 1% donations between 2010 and 2020: 92.641 billion forints went to civil society organisations, whilst 70.589 billion forints went to churches and priority causes. This means that, on average, taxpayers donated around 16.3 billion forints per year. At the same time, the amount that could potentially be donated is considerably higher than this, suggesting that many people do not make use of this opportunity and that significant sums remain unused within the system.
Donating 1% of your tax is a simple process that can have a significant impact on the functioning of the civil society sector. Through our individual decisions, we can contribute to the survival and development of organisations such as Élmény Tár, which supports disadvantaged children and their families.
Don’t let it go to waste!
Every year, millions of Hungarians let their 1% tax credits go to waste, even though this could bring about enormous change. According to data from the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), more than 10 billion forints’ worth of 1% tax credits remain unused each year, with no one claiming them. This sum would be a huge help to those civil society organisations carrying out vital work that fills a gap in the system.
At Élmény Tár, we work every day to provide disadvantaged children with supportive adult supervision, developmental programmes and a community space where they are truly listened to and helped. Your 1% donation directly helps ensure that our mentors can work with a predictable, secure foundation, and that as many children as possible can receive the support they would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.
What is the 1% tax used for?
Most fundraising initiatives are linked to a specific event; however, this year we are launching a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness of the importance of our support on an ongoing basis.
A mentor for every child! – So that every child has a supportive adult by their side who helps them build their self-confidence and overcome everyday challenges.
Developmental programmes, activities – Providing skills development programmes tailored to individual needs.
Professional training for mentors – Because the key to effective support lies in continuous development and expertise.
Maintaining a safe community space – A place where children can grow, learn and really feel at home.
Why is your help important?
Our work is independent, so we operate without central funding; that is why community support and your contributions are essential for us to continue our work. We are working towards a world where every child has the chance to live a full life – and we need everyone’s help to achieve this!
What is it good for?
If 60 people donate 2,500 Ft every month, we are able to provide a mentor with a monthly salary. If everyone reading this were to donate their 1% just once, we can fund a full year’s mentoring programme.
